CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Shaw and Alex commandeered the small living room of her apartment, turning it into their own makeshift investigation hub. With a quick flick of their wrists, they cleared the space of the coffee table, making room for the mountain of evidence they had amassed.

“That will not be enough space,” she said, her eyes scanning the room. “We need more space to work with.”

Shaw nodded in agreement, and together they hoisted the table from its place and moved it to the side of the kitchen. With a bit of maneuvering, they managed to create a decent-sized work area.

Alex stepped back and surveyed their handiwork, a satisfied grin spreading across her face. “That’s much better,” she said, nodding approvingly at the open space before them.

Shaw couldn’t agree more. With the table out of the way, they had plenty of room to spread out their evidence and start piecing together the clues. It was a minor victory, but one that would make all the difference in their quest for justice.

Shaw stood by, observing as Alex meticulously emptied the contents of the banker’s box. The sight of the folders and files sprawled out on the floor before him reminded him of a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece containing a vital clue that would eventually lead to the big-picture solution.

It was as if they were trying to put together the scattered pieces of a puzzle, but they were missing a crucial piece to complete it. Each folder, each document, held a key that would unlock the truth behind the missing girl’s case.

As Alex deftly sorted through the evidence, Shaw couldn’t help but feel a sense of urgency. If Taylor was right, time was running out, and they needed to piece together the puzzle before it was too late.

It was the process he had done since he arrived in DC four days ago, and he knew that Detective Taylor and his team did the same thing. And he had found clues they had overlooked. Now he hoped the same would happen, and he was certain Alex would find something he missed. She was the best criminal investigator he had ever met in his fifteen-year career. And he was in awe, watching her work.

Shaw leaned in closer, scanning the evidence laid out before him. He could feel the pieces of the puzzle coming together, the big picture beginning to take shape. But there was still something missing, a piece that would make everything fall into place, and he was hoping Alex would find it.

He watched as Alex furiously scribbled down notes, her eyes scanning the pages in front of her with laser-like focus. She was like a machine, tirelessly sifting through the evidence, searching for that one missing piece.

As the hours wore on, the room grew quiet, save for the rustling of papers and the scratch of pens on paper. And then, just as Shaw was about to give up hope, Alex let out a sharp gasp.

“I think I found something,” she said.

Shaw leaned in closer, his heart racing with excitement.
